Accessibility at Forward
A university that assesses capability cannot publish a website that excludes people. This page states the standard we hold, what we have done, and what is still not good enough.
The standard
What we commit to
Measured against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, Level AA, which is the standard public institutions worldwide are now held to.
- Target standard: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, Level AA.
- Every page reachable and operable by keyboard alone, with a visible focus ring and a skip link to the main content.
- One <main> landmark, one <h1> and a logical heading order on every page.
- Text and interface colours held to AA contrast on the dark hero imagery and on light body sections.
- Tap targets of at least 44 by 44 pixels on mobile, tested down to a 320-pixel viewport.
- Form fields with visible labels, described errors and no reliance on colour alone to signal state.
- Images carry alt text, or are marked decorative where they carry no information.
- Motion kept small and honouring the operating-system reduce-motion setting.
- Downloadable briefs and handbooks published as tagged, text-based PDFs, with the same content available as a web page.
Honesty first
What is not good enough yet
Publishing only the wins would make this statement worthless. These are the open items, and they are being worked.
- Curriculum tables are wide by nature. They scroll horizontally with a keyboard-reachable scroll region; a stacked view is planned.
- The capability radar is a visual chart. Its underlying values are published as text beside it, and a table view is planned.
- Some PDF extracts of the Compendium are long; a per-section HTML equivalent is being added programme by programme.
- No independent accessibility audit has been carried out yet. When one is, its date, auditor and findings will be published on this page.
Getting around by keyboard
- Tab moves forward, Shift and Tab move back, Enter or Space activates.
- The first Tab on any page offers a skip link straight to the main content.
- Escape closes the mobile menu, drawers and dialogs and returns focus where you left it.
- Arrow keys move within menus, tab strips and the programme filters.
