The twelve Forward capabilities

What this programme develops in you

Every Forward degree develops the same twelve cross-cutting capabilities. The profile below is the level this programme is designed to develop and verify by graduation, on the four-level scale in Part B2 of the Curriculum Compendium. Every claim above Level 2 is verified by someone other than the teaching lecturer.

Critical capabilities for this programme: Quantitative and Evidential Reasoning · Disciplinary Mastery · Technical Production and Craft · Stewardship and Public Contribution. A graduate cannot pass out of this programme below the stated level on any capability marked critical.

Programme Learning Outcomes

What you will be able to do

Each outcome is assessed, and each is tagged with the Forward capabilities it is verified against.

  1. PLO 1Make an original and defensible contribution to engineering knowledge.
  2. PLO 2Design and execute a substantial independent research programme with physical validation.
  3. PLO 3Publish in peer reviewed venues and withstand expert scrutiny.
  4. PLO 4Translate the result into use through deployment, licence standard or venture.
  5. PLO 5Teach and supervise under mentorship.
  6. PLO 6Exercise research ethics, safety governance and dual use assessment.

Why this programme exists

Doctoral research across robotics, microelectronics, manufacturing, autonomous systems and smart infrastructure, anchored in African engineering problems and required to terminate in something that works outside a laboratory. Candidates publish before submission and state the translation path from result to use.

Admission requirements

A Master's degree in engineering or a cognate discipline, a defensible proposal, and a supervisor with capacity. Alternative pathways: Foundation Year, diploma entry with advanced standing, mature age entry and recognition of prior learning, all governed by Part A5 and Part G. Online applicants additionally complete the compulsory Digital Readiness orientation under Part D6.
